Robert Sobukwe speaks…

Robert Sobukwe has long been relegated to the ‘forgotten heroes’ island. here’s an excerpt from an speech in April 4 1959 at the Convention of Africanists where the PAC was formally launched. in the following year, the PAC would organise the campaign against pass laws in Sharpeville and Langa. the campaign set for the 21st March 1960, ended in bloodshed and as a result the PAC was banned. it was exactly a year after it’s inauguration.

meditate on these words…

I wish to state that the Africanists do not at all
subscribe to the fashionable doctrine of South African exceptionalism. Our
contention is that South Africa is an integral part of the indivisible whole
that is Africa. She cannot solve her problems in isolation from and with
utter disregard of the rest of the continent

Against multi-racialism, we have this objection,
that the history of South Africa has fostered group prejudices and
antagonisms, and if we have to maintain the same group exclusiveness, parading
under the term of multi-racialism, we shall be transporting to the new
Africa these very antagonisms and conflicts. Further, multi-racialism is in
fact a pandering to European bigotry and arrogance. It is a method of
safeguarding white interests irrespective of population figures… a complete
negation of democracy
